Drawing Fundamentals

Updated: Apr 11

During my first year at NAFA, I developed a strong foundation in drawing fundamentals, which became essential for my artistic growth. Through structured exercises and observational studies, I honed my skills in capturing form, proportion, and spatial depth.

Medium: Chinese Ink Applied with Unconventional Tools. Dimensions: Varied sizes ranging from A4 to A2.

Key Areas of Learning:

  1. Observation & Perception – Training my eye to observe details, light, and proportions allowed me to translate real-life subjects onto paper with accuracy and expression.

  2. Line Quality & Gesture Drawing – Practicing different line weights, fluidity, and dynamic gestures helped me convey movement and rhythm in my sketches.

  3. Form & Structure – Breaking down complex objects into basic shapes (cubes, spheres, cylinders, etc.) improved my ability to construct realistic drawings with proper proportions and perspective.

  4. Light & Shadow (Shading Techniques) – Learning to render form through hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, and blending enhanced the realism and depth in my drawings.

  5. Perspective & Spatial Depth – Mastering one-point, two-point, and three-point perspective allowed me to create environments and compositions with accurate spatial relationships.

How It Benefited My Future Artworks:

  • Enhanced Technical Skills – A solid grasp of fundamentals gave me confidence in both traditional and digital drawing techniques.

  • Stronger Artistic Expression – Understanding light, form, and movement helped me create more expressive and dynamic compositions.

  • Foundation for Illustration & Fine Art – These skills became the backbone of my painting, printmaking, and conceptual art projects.

  • Improved Conceptual Thinking – Learning to break down complex subjects into simple structures allowed me to develop creative and experimental compositions.

This foundation in drawing has been essential in shaping my artistic journey, influencing my approach to illustration, design, and mixed-media art.
