Concept & Symbolism
Inspired by the theme “De Nouveau”, my painting reflects the emotional journey of isolation and renewal during the pandemic. A lonely bear in a glass dome symbolizes confinement, while the blue whale represents wisdom and hope, guiding the bear towards an orchid paradise with waterfalls, signifying healing and new beginnings.
Key symbols:
Bear in the Dome – Social isolation.
Whale – Strength and guidance.
Orchids – Resilience and renewal.
Waterfall – Endless possibilities.
Artistic Inspiration & Composition
I drew inspiration from:
Marianne North – Botanical precision for the orchid paradise.
David Miller – Underwater realism for coral reefs and marine life.
Composition:
The bear at the seafloor, isolated.
The whale leading upward, breaking free.
Orchid paradise at the top, using warm, vibrant colours contrasting the cool, muted underwater tones.
Watercolour Painting Process
Sketch & Adjustments – Defined composition and refined based on feedback.
Layering Techniques –
1st layer: Wet-on-wet, light wash.
2nd layer: Wet-on-dry, adding depth.
3rd layer: Enhancing details and contrast.
Final Touches – Deepened seascape colours, refined the whale and bear, ensuring a harmonious contrast.
Final Reflection
This artwork captures the emotional shift from isolation to hope. Lecturer insights helped refine the composition, emphasizing storytelling through colours and movement.
Through this process, I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for watercolour techniques, composition balance, and the power of symbolism in art. This painting serves as a reminder of resilience, hope, and new beginnings.
Every brushstroke is a step toward renewal. 🎨✨
