An Immersive Artistic and Cultural Experience
Embarking on the FOAD Study Trip to Bali was a transformative journey filled with artistic exploration, cultural immersion, and deep learning experiences. Over the course of five days, we visited renowned institutions, engaged in hands-on workshops, and explored the rich heritage and sustainable practices that make Bali a hub of creativity and tradition. Here’s a recap of our unforgettable journey:
Day 2: Indonesian Institute of the Arts, Denpasar & Green School Bali

Our day began with a visit to the Indonesian Institute of the Arts, Denpasar, where we participated in a Balinese Ornament Drawing workshop. This session introduced us to the intricate patterns and symbolic designs deeply rooted in Balinese culture. Guided by skilled artists, we learned traditional techniques used in temple carvings, textiles, and decorative arts. The experience provided valuable insights into how art serves as both a cultural expression and a storytelling medium in Indonesia.
In the afternoon, we embarked on the Green School Bali Tour, an eye-opening experience that showcased the power of sustainability in education. Nestled within lush jungle groves, Green School is an architectural marvel made entirely of bamboo, emphasizing eco-conscious design and immersive learning. We explored students’ projects, engaged with the holistic approach to education, and deepened our understanding of the "Green School way," which integrates nature, creativity, and sustainability into the curriculum.
Day 3: Penglipuran Village & Tirta Empul Temple
The third day led us to Penglipuran Village, a renowned Balinese settlement celebrated for its well-preserved architecture, deep-rooted traditions, and strong cultural heritage. Walking through the village was like stepping back in time, as we observed the harmonious blend of spirituality, community living, and traditional craftsmanship. The village’s commitment to sustainable tourism and cultural preservation made a lasting impression on us.
Later, we visited Tirta Empul Temple, a sacred site famous for its holy spring waters used for purification rituals. This spiritual journey allowed us to witness locals and visitors alike participating in the traditional cleansing ceremony, reinforcing the deep connection between Balinese culture and its spiritual practices. The temple’s stunning architecture, surrounded by serene landscapes, made it a truly immersive cultural experience.
Day 4: Kevala Ceramics - Where Vision Takes Shape
We had the privilege of visiting Kevala Ceramics, a high-end ceramics manufacturer renowned for its dedication to artisanal mastery and conscious luxury. Here, we witnessed the meticulous craftsmanship behind Bali’s finest ceramics, blending traditional techniques with contemporary design. The visit provided an in-depth look at how sustainability, creativity, and functionality converge to produce bespoke ceramics. Observing the artisans at work and understanding the process from raw material to final product was a truly inspiring experience.
Day 5: Secret Garden Village – A Hidden Gem of Balinese Heritage

Our final day brought us to Secret Garden Village, a unique destination that combines cultural education, environmental conservation, and experiential tourism. This hidden gem showcases Balinese traditions, coffee-making processes, herbal remedies, and local crafts, allowing us to appreciate the rich history and sustainable innovations of the region. It was the perfect way to wrap up our journey, reinforcing the themes of art, culture, and sustainability that had been central throughout our trip.
Final Thoughts
The FOAD Study Trip to Bali was more than just a travel experience; it was an opportunity to immerse ourselves in the artistry, heritage, and sustainability efforts that define Balinese culture. From engaging in hands-on workshops to witnessing innovative educational models and preserving cultural traditions, we returned with a deeper appreciation for art, nature, and the role of sustainability in creative practices.
My Reflection
Painting a living canvas of the vast padi fields felt like capturing a fleeting masterpiece—one that symbolizes the delicate balance between nature and tradition. The experience reinforced the urgency of preserving such landscapes, not only as breathtaking sceneries but as vital cultural legacies that shape the identity and heritage of the people who live in harmony with them. It was a humbling reminder of the importance of safeguarding these environments through appreciation, awareness, and sustainable practices.
This journey has undoubtedly enriched our perspectives, inspiring us to integrate these learnings into our own artistic and educational practices. Bali’s vibrant culture and commitment to sustainability serve as a powerful reminder that creativity and conservation can go hand in hand.
Until the next adventure, we carry these experiences forward in our artistic journey!
